Where to start with modifying your 4WD?

We get plenty of questions from fans and followers asking us, what is the best beginner and/or starter modification to make to your four wheel drive? Starting to modify your car can be a bit daunting as there are so many different options and modifications to choose from. One of my favorite and first modifications I make to all my vehicles is a good dual battery set up.

A good dual battery system, in my opinion, should be one of the first things that you upgrade. Especially if you’re planning on doing long weekenders and even bigger touring trips.

A good dual battery system is an absolute must! I have chosen to use the Redarc Manager 30 to look after my dual battery setup. It will let you run all your 12volt applications and not have to worry about ice and an esky. This is seriously a game changer if you are camping or exploring for more than just a day.

The system allows you to:

  • Changes an auxiliary battery from the vehicle while on the move
  • Monitor battery levels and power usage
  • Easily see remaining time left on the batteries charge based on the current output from connected systems.
  • The power being generated from a solar panels.
  • The time remaining to charge the battery.

The Manager 30 operates like 6 separate products all in one handy unit.

This is all easily visible from a simple display that I mounted above me in my overhead roof console. It seriously will change the way you camp, no more stressing about running out of battery power for your fridge and other appliances.

I have also combined the Redarc Manager 30 with a 2000-watt inverter allowing me to use 240v appliances (standard wall power points) and charge my devices, power a TV, coffee machine and so much more. For me the ability to charge all of our camera gear is essential, we no longer need to rely on taking a generator or stopping in to a town to charge our camera gear. My favorite thing is I have been able to run my coffee machine for a decent morning brew. This makes a world of difference when the closest town is 100km away and you need those creature comforts.

The invertor is not only slim line but looks the goods as well. Making it a stand out feature in any truck.

Welcome to The Explore Life

Ever since I was around 12 years old I fell in love with four-wheel driving. I remember seeing my family and friends as a youngster navigating muddy tracks, camping in the middle of nowhere and the joy of being outdoors with nature. Yet I wasn’t able to drive at that stage (well legally anyway) and for over the last decade I dedicated my life to one thing, the lifestyle. You can’t simply write words to explain what I’ve had the privilege of experienced and the beautiful landscapes and adventures I’ve been on since that defining moment as a child. Although, I will try… This lifestyle is in my blood and I’m thankful I can now live and breath my passion.

There are very few people that can claim that they’re living their dream, and thankfully I am one of them. What was an obsession has now become my job.

The Explore Lifestyle and Explore 4×4 is a culmination of passion, adventure, challenges, exploring and most importantly having fun. Seeing this beautiful country of ours, the off beaten tracks, the hilarious personalities / characters we meet on the road and the time I get to spend with friends and family is truly a blessing.

Considering all of the above, we decided to create a series for enthusiasts, 4WD fans and anybody who needs a little adventure in their life. As we speak, we are in the process of filming our first television series of ‘The Explore Life’. More info and some sneak peaks to come soon.

Along with my partners, friends and sponsors, we will take you on a journey to explore what this beautiful country has to offer. I can tell you it’s like no other country in the world. I guess that’s why they call Australia the lucky country. Harsh deserts, tropical rainforests, beaches, muddy trails and more. It is a geological oddity.

At The Explore Life, we don’t like to take ourselves too seriously, with a focus on being with friends and having a laugh. We want to show you how you can experience what we live and breath everyday. Every challenge, every low and every high. It’s not easy, but the reward is an experience you will never forget.

Stay tuned for our first season and we are looking forward to seeing you there.

In a snapshot, we’re an adventure seeking couple from Cairns with a lust for life and a love of travel – our desire to discover places new and old will underpin our journey across this great country of ours. We dare you to come along for the ride as we share our experiences, learn something about ourselves that we didn’t already know, and traverse many a dirt and dusty track to tick off our bucket list of destinations. Hi there! We are Ryan, Alison, Will and Evan; a young family originally from a small town about an hour and a half south of Sydney.

We love nothing more than being out exploring new areas and taking in new sights. The rugged, remote and expansive nature of this country is what inspires and motivates us to explore further; through challenging terrain and across some of the toughest tracks to find hidden (and not so well hidden) locations. We set out to experience everything our country has to offer.

Where we have the option, we take the dirt road, find the camps that aren’t on maps and take the long way. We plan on documenting this right here through our blog posts and also on Facebook and Instagram. Click here to see one of our latest blogs.

Trip in a Van

Caravanning around Australia is something we have always wanted to do, it was just a matter of when. We knew that we would be locked into schooling, sport and work for the next 20 years so we bit the bullet! We started planning our Aussie adventure and left a couple months later in Dec 2015. On board we have our 2 sons (now 4 & 2) and 1-year-olddaughter. Being in our early thirties we thought it was an ideal time to get away from the daily grind and enjoy precious family time. It has been an awesome experience and definitely the best decision we’ve made. Our kids are thriving on the changing environments, social interaction and we love watching them learn through nature.

We are exploring Oz in our Jurgens Narooma caravan and it’s an ideal set up for our young family. It has all the comforts of home including full kitchen, shower, toilet and washing machine. It’s light off road capabilities and independent suspension makes our trip enjoyable. Our tow vehicle is a Mazda BT50 and we are really happy with its fuel economy and trouble free towing.

We hope you enjoy our travels.
